MOISSANITES

Moissanite, also known by its chemical name, silicon carbide (SiC), is a naturally occurring rare mineral found in very limited quantities or as minute particles in the earth. It is named after Henri Moissan who first discovered it in its natural form. In 1893 he found several crystals in a meteor crater in Canyon Diablo in Arizona. At first he believed he had found diamonds, it took until 1904 before he identified it as a new mineral. For years, scientists tried to re-create this extraordinarily brilliant material. Only recently, through the power of advanced technology, Charles & Colvard developed a way to produce in a laboratory, large gem-quality crystals which can be faceted into near-colorless jewels with incomparable fire and brilliance.

Since 1998, when the first moissanite reached the jewelry market, it has been regarded as an excellent fine jewel, with optical properties exceeding those of diamond. Because it has its own unique appearance, it can not be truly called a diamond simulant. Its ethical production, however, does make it a popular alternative to diamonds.

Moissanite is made exclusively by Charles & Covard and is NOT a Cubic Zirconia (CZ) stone with a fancy name. When compared with a CZ the differences are obvious. A CZ is an inexpensive simulated diamond and is inferior in almost every gemological property to moissanite. It rates very low on Mohs scale of hardness, scratches easily and looses its luster after a few years. The moissanite measures 9.2 on Mohs scale and maintains its brilliance for years.

Moissanite's remarkable dispersion (fire)—its ability to break white light into the spectral colors—is one reason so many women are enchanted by its beauty. Its superior brilliance and luster—its ability to reflect more white light back to the viewer—is another reason women around the world are choosing to own this incredible jewel. Moissanite has nearly 2.4 times the fire of a diamond which makes it incredibly appealing and gorgeous in any setting.
